Poker is a card game played by a number of players, each with chips that they can use to make bets. The object of the game is to have the highest-ranked hand when the betting rounds are over. The player with the best hand wins the pot, or all of the money that was bet during the hand.

A good knowledge of the game’s rules and some of its famous tells is also helpful, as is the ability to read and analyze other players’ betting patterns.
Before a round of poker begins, the players must make forced bets, called an ante and blind bets. The dealer shuffles the cards, and then each player is dealt 2 cards, face-down (hidden from the other players). After the first round of betting, 3 more cards are dealt to the center of the table, which are called the “flop.” Another betting phase begins with the player to the left of the big blind. Then, each player must decide whether to call the flop bet or fold. The player with the highest-ranked 5-card hand wins all of the money in the pot. The rest of the players may agree to share the pot in a different way, depending on the agreement between them.
